Why I'm Annoyed at the Trump Movement
Over the past few decades, we've see the following happen:
- A group on the A-list of the Left has a problem.
- There's a plausible solution that doesn't really work.
- Libertarians (including me) explain that it doesn't work.
- Conservatives cheer for the libertarians.
- Leftists attribute the conservative–libertarian opposition to hatred of the group on line 1.
Now we see a similar phenomenon:
- A group on the A-list of the Right has a problem.
- There's a plausible solution that doesn't really work.
- Libertarians (including me) explain that it doesn't work.
- Conservatives claim we betrayed them.
- Libertarians realize the Leftists on line 5 of the first list may have been right … at least about conservatives.
But wait, there's more…
We have recently seen a wide variety of claims by conservatives: On the one hand, they claim working-class Americans are irreplaceable; on the other hand, they claim working-class Americans are being replaced. Should there be a debate between the two factions?
There are more claims by conservatives: On the one hand, they claim hiring illegal aliens is some kind of giveaway; on the other hand, they claim hiring illegal aliens is a matter of slave labor. Should there be another debate between the two factions?
And furthermore…
In 2020, posted (about Trump):
He hasn't been nearly as bad as I had feared. The borders haven't slammed shut; there's no trade war with China; and birthright citizenship is still the law.
Sigh.
