Both Democrats and Republicans will, I think, take the wrong lessons away from this election:
The Democrats will assume that the mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging Neanderthals have finally admitted the moral and intellectual superiority of the Petulant Left, and given them permission to implement the entire progressive agenda.
The Republicans will assume that the GOP has drifted too far from its economic-conservative roots, and that its 2008 platform should be whatever paleocons and libertarians will not come to blows over.
I opine that a working majority of the American electorate is in fact populist: socially conservative, economically liberal (as long as the spending is on them, and the taxes on that fellow behind that tree) with the little guy favored because he's little, not because his cause is necessary just, and isolationist almost, but not quite, to the point of xenophobia.
I predict that what the electorate will demand in 2008 is a more competent Bush who is willing to build a fence along the Rio Grande.
